Mandarin is the national language of China and Taiwan, and is the language you should choose if travelling to those countries. China’s large population makes Mandarin the most spoken language on the planet. Spoken Chinese is distinguished by its high level of internal diversity, though all spoken varieties of Chinese are tonal and analytic.

The course focuses on speaking in Cantonese through Mandarin Chinese. Students learn basic sentence structures and grammatical rules, and acquire a vocabulary of 400 words used in basic conversation. Course texts are written in Pinyin, the widely-used transliteration system for Chinese characters. This allows students to focus on improving their communication skills, both speaking and comprehension. The class meets once a week and students are required to complete the homework assignments sent by the teacher after each lesson.

Chinese or the Sinitic language(s) can be considered a language or language family. About one-fifth of the world’s population, or over 1 billion people, speaks some form of Chinese as their native language.
